Using video end-to-end encryption (E2EE)
Video end-to-end encryption (E2EE) is an optional security feature that protects your video and audio recordings with a passphrase you create. Only your enrolled mobile device can enter this passphrase to view recordings from end-to-end-enabled devices. No one else, including Ring, can access your encrypted content. You can enrol up to five Ring devices in video end-to-end encryption.
Requirements to use Video End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)
- A compatible smartphone or tablet.
- iOS15 or newer
- Android9 or newer
- The most recent release of the Ring app installed on your smartphone or tablet..
- Note:Video Doorbell (1st Gen), Video Doorbell Wired, Stick Up Cam (1st Gen), and Spotlight Cam (1st Gen) areNOTcompatible with end-to-end encryption.
- A compatible Ring device.
Set up Video End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)
Follow these steps in the Ring app to set up end-to-end encryption:
- Tap themenu (☰).
- TapControl Centre.
- SelectVideo Encryption.
- TapEnd-to-End Encryption.
- SelectEnable End-to-End Encryption.
- TapSet up End-To-End Encryption.
- Save the generated passphrase in a secure place, and check the box at the bottom of the screen to confirm.
- Note:If you lose your smartphone or tablet or get a new one, you can use the passphrase to set up a new mobile device and view your encrypted videos. Without the passphrase, you will not have access to encrypted videos.
- TapConfirm and Continue.
- Navigate back to themenu (☰)and tapControl Centre.
- SelectVideo Encryption.
- TapEnd-to-End Encryption.
- If the smartphone or tablet is not enrolled as a viewing device, tapEnrol This Deviceto add it.
- You will be prompted to enter the passphrase to enrol the smartphone or tablet.
- Enter the passphrase and tapContinue.
- You will need to enrol your Ring devices. Navigate back to themenu (☰)and tapControl Centre.
- TapEnd-to-End Encryption.
- TapEnrolled Ring Devices.
- TapEnrolnext to each chosen device.
- You will be prompted toAgree and Continueafter reviewing impacted features.
- You will be prompted to set the Ring device up again during the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) enrolment.Enrolnext to each chosen device.
Feature Changes
The following features and functions will NOT be available for your enrolled Ring devices while end-to-end encryption is enabled:

- Live View from multiple mobile devices simultaneously
- Watching Ring videos on Amazon Echo Show, Amazon Fire TV or Tablet, or third-party devices

- Virtual Security Guard
- Snapshot Capture

Turn off Video End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)
To turn off video end-to-end encryption, follow these steps in the Ring app to unenrol:
- Tap themenu (☰).
- TapControl Centre.
- TapVideo Encryption.
- TapVideo End-to-End Encryption.
- TapRemoveto confirm.
Note: If you unenrol your account in end-to-end encryption, you will lose access to previously recorded encrypted videos, and you will need to manually re-enable certain features. The following chart will tell you which features will turn on automatically and which ones you’ll need to re-enable manually:
