How extreme temperatures affect battery life

Understanding the temperatures that can impact battery performance can help you take steps to keep your device working properly.

  • 50°C
    :
The device will shut down immediately to avoid damaging the internal components.
  • 45°C
    :
Your Ring device may still work at this temperature, but if it stays this hot for too long, it could shut down.
  • 3°C
: The battery might not hold a charge as long, so you will have to charge the unit more often.
  • 0°C
: At freezing temperatures, the battery might not charge at all, even if the device is hardwired.
  • -20.5°C
: The battery might stop working completely until it warms up.

How to protect your device

You can help protect your device when temperatures get too high or too low.

Bring your device inside

  • Cold weather:
When the temperature drops below zero and the battery dies, bring it inside and charge it with a USB cord. This will allow your device to warm up while the battery charges.
  • Hot weather:
When the temperature is over 45°C, bring the device inside. Remove the battery and let both the battery and the device to cool to room temperature. Do not charge the battery until it cools down.

Charge the battery

No matter how hot or cold it is, make sure the battery is charged at least 90% before remounting it. A full charge helps the battery will last longer.

Avoid direct sunlight

In hot climates, do not place the device in direct sunlight. This can overheat the device. If possible, install your device in a shaded area.

Monitor battery life and temperature

Keep an eye on the battery, especially in extreme temperatures. If the temperature is too hot or cold, you might notice charging issues or shorter battery life.

When the battery won’t recharge

If the battery is too hot or too cold, it won’t charge. The device’s software will prevent it from charging to protect the battery. Let the device warm up or cool down to room temperature before trying to charge it.

Sleep Mode

To protect the battery, Sleep Mode will activate on compatible devices at the following temperatures:

  • Reaches high temperature (~60ºC)
  • Reaches low temperature (~-20.5ºC)
  • Reaches critical battery level (~10% battery or lower)
