Understanding Smoke Alarms with Professional Monitoring
Ring Alarm provides smoke & CO monitoring as part of the Alarm Professional Monitoring¹ add-on service for residential neighbors. Ring does not offer Smoke Alarm Professional Monitoring for business locations.
To have smoke & CO monitoring,¹ you will need one of the following:
- with an existing battery operated or hardwired smoke or CO detector.
Professional Monitoring is an add-on plan that first requires a compatible Ring Home subscription. Both sold separately. Service available within the U.S. (all 50 states, but not U.S. territories) and in Canada (excluding Quebec). Ring does not own its monitoring center. Smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring is not available for business or commercially zoned addresses. See Ring Alarm licenses at: ring.com/licenses. Additional fees may be required for permits, false alarms, or Alarm Verified Guard Response, depending on your local jurisdiction.

How does Alarm Professional Monitoring¹ work with a Smoke or CO Alarm?
When your smoke alarm sounds in your home, a smoke alarm signal is sent to the monitoring center. The monitoring center will attempt to contact your first emergency contact. If no one answers, the monitoring center will request fire dispatch. Then, the monitoring center will attempt to call the emergency contacts to notify them that the fire department has been dispatched.
Can I cancel a Smoke Alarm?
You can cancel a smoke alarm by answering the first monitoring center call, disarming on your Ring Alarm Keypad within the first 30 seconds, or from the Ring app.

Who gets called before requesting the Fire Department?
We call your first emergency contact before requesting the fire department in order to give you the chance to cancel a false alarm. Since fire emergencies are critical and every minute counts, we only have time to make one phone call. Make sure that your first emergency contact will answer the monitoring center call.
Can I use Ring Alarm Smoke and CO Monitoring¹ at a business?
Ring cannot provide professional smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) monitoring at business locations due to strict local regulations across the U.S. and Canada. This means that neighbors who set up a Ring Alarm with Alarm Professional Monitoring¹ at a business or commercially-zoned address cannot be monitored for smoke or carbon monoxide by Ring.
What if I don’t disarm using the keypad or from the Ring app² and I don’t answer the Monitoring Center Call?
If you can disarm² your Ring Alarm within 30 seconds of the smoke alarm getting triggered, you should be able to stop the fire department from coming to your home, but there’s no guarantee. After 30 seconds, fire department dispatch is requested to your home.
Can I use Smoke and CO Alarms with Self Monitoring?
Yes. Your Alarm or Alarm Pro Base Station siren will sound locally in your home. You and your Shared Users will receive push notifications from the Ring app and e-mails about the event. Get to safety and call 911.
You can get this monitoring in any mode - Home, Away, and Disarmed². If there is no professional monitoring,¹ you’ll need to call emergency responders yourself.
